The Elmwood marina and adjacent public park have long been popular with local families; however, its facilities were outdated and required modernization. In addition, township planners beleived that improving and expanding these facilities would strengthen them as an attraction and complement Elmwood Township’s vision of making the Greilickville corridor a regional waterfront destination.
With the marina and park acting as a magnet, other recreational, educational and marine historical non-profit organizations have settled along the one mile M-22 Greilickville corridor. In addition, a number of businesses that complement and service this waterfront activity have sprung up nearby.
Starting in 2004, a number of studies were initiated to determine how to leverage these water-oriented recreational centers to create a world class waterfront attraction. The concept, "build it and they will come" has never been truer.
In 2009 additional slips were added to the marina and in 2011 the park was modernized with additional facilities, landscaping and improved access. In 2011, the Elmwood Township Board contracted with JJR of Ann Arbor, an internationally known waterfront and recreational planning firm, to assist in developing a broad master plan for continued modernization of the marina and expansion of the Greilickville waterfront and commercial corridor.
Both the marina Master Plan and the “framework plan” developed by JJR call on the Township Board to consider ways to provide more parking, better traffic flow, and improved pedestrian crossings of M-22 in Greilickville, along with non-motorized connectivity to the nearby Leelanau Trail.
